Abuja Summer Institute Opens to Accelerate Young Women in Digital Media

Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and University of California, Santa Cruz are among the contributors to the Abuja Summer Institute (ASI) taking place this week in Abuja and next week in Kano which is providing digital social entrepreneurship training primarily targeting northern Nigerian women.
ASI seeks to accelerate the participation of these women in Nigeria’s rapidly growing digital economy, and to encourage workshop participants to take proactive leadership roles in social entrepreneurship activities. The curriculum includes training on blogging, using digital video and photographic applications, business promotion, raising social awareness, utilizing mobile phone applications for micro-enterprises, and

other tools.

ASI concluded a week long workshop for 30 women in Abuja on July 14 and plans to provide similar training in Kano the week of July 17.

ASI partners include the Centre for Information Technology and Development (an organization committed to the use of information and communication technologies for development and promotion of

good governance), the Women’s Rights Advancements and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), the African Studies Program at SAIS, and the Everett Program (an IT social entrepreneurship initiative at the University of California, Santa Cruz).
